The requirement for Dollar General is to track their inventory and record customer sales and they require a holistic system to record and track that. For all its branches, the system design must be same so that they are able to record the sales, products, suppliers, customers and shippers. The system would acknowledge the very use of several aspects so that it is one time investment for the firm. Database description: The ERD consists of Customers who purchase products; products are supplied by the suppliers and there are billed accordingly.
The customer may belong to several regions and territories where the product is shipped for their service. The cardinality ratios are as follows: 1. Products and categories share an N: 1 relationship as a single product can have several categories. 2. Products and Orders share a 1: N relationship as there are several products of same type which can be ordered by several customers. 3. Products and suppliers share an N: 1 relationship as a single product can be supplied by many suppliers of different price.
4. Employees have an N: 1 cardinality ratio denoting that employees of Dollar General are clerks, lead clerks, sales managers, assistant managers and others. 5. Employees belong to several regions and territories which share a 1: N relationship as many employees belong to various regions as per the locations of the company. 6. One customer can have several orders and thus share a N:1 relationship 7. Customers are further classified into several demographics and share 1: N cardinality ratio. Normalization:
The normalization of the database is done by determining the 1NF, 2NF and 3NF operations. The M: N relationships have been broken down into 1: N and N: 1 for simplicity and database operations.
